February 5th 1672 granted by Sir William Berkeley Knight Governor of
VA. Granting to Edmund PALMER 2800 acres of land located in the County
of Isle of Wight for the transportation of fifty six persons. Matthew
FFONES is listed as one of those transported. (VA Patents 6,p.443,
Library of Virginia Digital Collection: Land Office Patents and
Grants)
Isle of Wight County, VA. Court 17 Sep 1678 Inquest, we the
subscribers here of are impaneled upon a Jury of Inquest to inquire
after the death of a man found dead upon the sands near the mouth of
Lyons Creek do find this man to be a Neager & that he died of
naturally and that there was something tied with a roap about his neck
& cast into the river, Sep 17, 1678 the mke F of Mathew Foanes along
with the name and mark of others impaneled. Isle of Wight Co., VA.

Will & Testament of Matthew FFOANES, County of Isle of Whight, VA..
OCT 11 1703. In the name of God Amen. The Last Will & Testament of
Matthew FFOANES, being sick & weak of body but of a good memory
(praised be to God for it) First I give my soul to God, He gave it to
me, my body to the earth for burial in a decent manner. I give to my
loving wife, Abigale FFOANES, after my debts is paid my whole estate
during her natural life or day of marriage, I execept five cows, one
heiffer and a cow calf, and three barrows, two sows and eight goats
to Robert FFOANES, I give equall to Thomas FFOANES, the son of John
FFOANES, the first mare/fillly the gray mare brings, I give equally to
Anne BENNETT the daughter of William BENNETT, three ewes. If my wife
dyes in her widowhood, that what is left to be equally divided betwixt
my sons Robert FFOANES, John FFOANES, to childern Thomas FFOANES, Mary
FFOANES, she marries to be divided betwixt her, and there aforward, I
do order my loving wife Abigale to be whole executor of this my last
will and testament and I do request Capt. Arthur SMITH to see if
equally divided as I afix my hand this 11th day of October, 1703.
Proved in open Court held for Isle of Wight Co. 9th Day of August,
1704 by oaths of George WOOD, Phillip PARDOE and Ordered to record.
