from the tax records of Richmond and Westmoreland Counties of Virginia
(the Northern Neck area of VA.). John FONES first located in Bath
County where he lived for approx: 10yrs before moving into Fleming
County.
Surname Spellings, FONES:
Kentucky clerks and census takers spelled the name FONES as it sounded
to them. I have found records of this family with all the following:
FONES, FOANS, FONS, FAWNS AND FAUNS.
Some of this family began using the spelling FAWNS in the 1800's and
continue to use it to this day (1997).

Fleming CO., KY., Eastern District, census of 1830 page 68 list John
FAWNS (FONES) age between 60 and 70yrs. Listed with him one female 20
to 30yrs of age and one female 30 to 40yrs of age.
Rev. War pension Application dated 01/07/1833 in Fleming County KY. by
John FONS (FONES), His age is listed as 66yrs on the 30th day May
last. That he entered the army of the U.S. as a drafted militiaman
for three months in the county of Westmoreland, VA. in the company of
Capt. James MUSE and the regiment of Col. HUNGERFORD; in the month of
May 1780. He was dismissed on 08/1780 at Leedstown, VA.. Again drafted
for three months on 06/1781 in the county Westmoreland and attached to
the company of Capt. James MUSE and the regiment of Col. Richard LEE
and continued in the service until 09/ or 10/1781 and was dismissed at
a place called Mattox Bridge in the county of King Geroge.
