BIO:The "Northern Neck" Newspaper of Richmond CO. VA., May 23, 1919.
Mr. and Mrs. L. H. FONES are in receipt of the following letter from
their son, Milford: dated Saturday, March 22,.
Dear Dad,
It is about ten days since I have gotten any mail from anyone, but I
can't let that worry me when I have gone a month without receiving
any. You were the last one I heard from. It is getting near time to
come home, so the mail dosen't matter so much.
We have had snow three days this week. It isn't cold though and with
the rain included it is about all gone. I shot for record yesterday
and made sharpshooter. The weather was bad, though, windy, raining
and hailing. When we were practicing for a team some time ago I held
better then that, but the team was dismissed and I hadn't had any
practice for some time.
We are still turning in some equipment all along, getting ready to
move. Turned in a blanket today, leaving us with two. That does
better than last September when we had one blanket and for several
days none. There is one night expecially that I shall not forget,
the 28th of September, it rained all night and I lay down on the
ground that night and tried to put a few pieses of broking board over
me. The next morning about two inches of water were nestling as close
as possible. The next night I had found a few pieces of tarred paper
and was as usual on the ground with them over me and it wasn't raining
when night came on, but in the night some bold little drops in the
face awakened me.
During all the time Jerry was putting over his reminders. One shell
knocked out three horses of five that were tied about 20 yards of thee
there. All of this didn't give me a cold, but it did take both hands
to straighten out the knees very often.
Expect to move from here to LeMans about the last of the month. I
don't know how long to be there. From there we go to port. Best
perhaps. Wish it might be Bordeaux. Should like to have seen some
of England while over here. Have seen enough of France to last me a
Lifetime.
It is near time for dinner so will call this off for this time.
Best wishes as ever,
Milford
